New documentary showcases housing’s unsung hero

In June 2025, the Affordable Housing Alliance of Central Ohio screened for a sold-out audience the world premiere of “United: the Hidden Story of the Humble Duplex,” an original short film by Director Anita Kwan.

United tells the powerful story of how the modest duplex emerged as a symbol of middle-class strength and mobility at Columbus’ turn of the century. As segregation divided the country, the duplex was targeted and often outlawed throughout the region. But today, a new generation is reclaiming this architectural icon and reviving it as a tool for growth, wealth, and individuality.

You can catch the next screening at AHACO’s Movie Night on July 17th, celebrating National Peach Ice Cream Day (tickets and toppings are free)!

Groups may also contact the Affordable Housing Alliance of Central Ohio to schedule a private screening with a professionally facilitated discussion. This is a great opporunity for board meetings, lunch clubs, and civic associations. Theater space can be provided upon request.

Produced by the Affordable Housing Alliance of Central Ohio, the film also offers a fresh lens on today’s housing challenges. The region currently faces a shortage of over 50,000 affordable homes, a problem that now touches half of all residents. But the duplex, it turns out, may hold some answers.

“There’s no silver bullet,” said AHACO Executive Director Carlie J. Boos, “but history gives us clues. Duplexes quietly helped generations of Central Ohioans put down roots—and they still can, if we let them.” She noted that, in Central Ohio, zoning laws written before the civil rights movement still block duplexes in many neighborhoods.
