How You Can Help Today!

Anthropologist Margaret Mead once said: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has!” In that spirit, AHACO creates a monthly quick guide to help neighbors get involved in housing advocacy… no experience needed! We carefully select a variety of trending events and topics so that there’s a little something for everyone. It’s a great way to grab a friend and change our little part of the world!

March: Advocate!

Whitehall just launched a community engagement survey. Take it now and share what you think can be done to make housing more affordable & accessible!

Or take the West Broad Street Transit-Oriented Development Plan Public Survey. Read more about the project here.

Or (yes, lots of surveys right now!) take this survey from Ohio Wesleyan specifically for recent grads on their housing priorities.

The City of Columbus is debating adopting a rental registry that would require property owners to disclose more contact information and disclosure on the building’s conditions. Read up on the topic and see where you stand!

The ROAD To Housing Act just passed the Senate, and it already cleared the House. So now the two federal chambers must reconcile differences. Your legislators always want to hear your thoughts (AHACO is solidly in the “pro” column!). Keep an eye out for last minute jostling from private equity folks who are pushing back against limits on Wall St. ownership of single-family homes!

March: Donate!

The Motherful Village is an affordable housing initiative for single moms. It may include: affordable, cooperative housing designed to meet the real needs of single-mother households; green spaces for healing, gathering, and play — including gardens, walking paths, and safe play areas; shared resources and responsibilities, from meal prep rotations to community upkeep; on-site child care support, mutual aid, and wraparound services; and programming and peer leadership, because every mother has something to give and receive.

You can donate to help them here!

March: volunteer!

Check out the volunteer opportunities at Star House,. Founded in 2006, Star House is Central Ohio’s only drop-in center serving youth ages 14–24 that integrates continuous best-practice research with trauma-informed care to improve outcomes for youth experiencing homelessness. We provide low-barrier access to essentials like food, clothing, hygiene items, laundry facilities, showers, and a safe place to be. Beyond basic needs, our clinical team connects youth with therapy,
