Anthropologist Margaret Mead once said: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has!” In that spirit, AHACO creates a monthly quick guide to help neighbors get involved in housing advocacy… no experience needed! We carefully select a variety of trending events and topics so that there’s a little something for everyone. It’s a great way to grab a friend and change our little part of the world!

How You Can Help Today!

October: Advocate

Join Columbus City Council President Shannon Hardin on October 2nd for a hearing on the “Yes In God’s Backyard” proposal, which would give nonprofits, churches, and schools more flexibility to build affordable housing on their own land to serve their missions. The conversation starts at 2:00 PM, email Jessica at JNClinger@columbus.gov by 10/1 to speak!

October: Donate

The federal Emergency Rent Assistance program ended permanently on Sept. 30th (unfortunately, the same day federal employees were furloughed without pay). A donation to our eviction prevention nonprofits can help families stay afloat during unexpected emergencies. COMPASS, IMPACT Community Action, Jewish Family Services, and Legal Aid of Southeast and Central Ohio are all great options.

October: volunteer

YWCA Columbus is celebrating two decades of hope and transformation with a “Week of Service” from Oct. 27 through 31. You can join their Truck or Treat event to make sure kids have a safe space to spend their Halloween. For something totally different, volunteer at legal aid! This gives both lawyers and non-attorneys a chance to see behind the scenes of our legal system and help families in need.

October: Engage

For a fun and artsy way to get engaged, join a free screening of the original film, “United: the Hidden History of the Humble Duplex” happening in October. Or travel to Newark for a free screening of “Beyond the Bridge: a Solution to Homelessness” at the Midland Theatre. And be sure to join our partners at Bloom614 at the 2025 Financial Wellness Symposium on October 16!
