Building Homes and Communities for When We Age

Longer lifespans, evolving household structures, and growing care needs are changing what people need from their homes and communities. In this webinar, which builds on Shelterforce’s recent Under the Lens series—Housing in an Aging Society, panelists will discuss how households are adapting to the realities of growing older, and the housing policies and solutions that can help support aging safely, affordably, and connected to one another. This 90-minute webinar will explore: ✔️ What is the scale of the housing need for an aging U.S. population? ✔️ What does it mean to “age in place,” or “age in community,” and what are the differences between the two terms? ✔️ What is “livability” and how can it be promoted in an aging community?  ✔️ How does age discrimination intersect with other forms of discrimination such as sexism and racism and what are some promising ways to confront that? ✔️ What are some promising approaches to leverage existing housing infrastructure to enable people to age in their own homes and communities? ✔️ How does an intergenerational community function? What are the benefits and the challenges for both younger and older residents? ✔️ What are the public policy measures that can better support aging in community? What do they cost—and what is the cost of not acting? ✔️ What are some specific steps advocates can take to improve housing options for older Americans? Panelists include: - Delores Bailey, executive director of EMPOWERment Inc., a community development corporation in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. - Rodney Harrell, vice president of family, home, and community for AARP Public Policy Institute. Harrell is a lead for AARP’s housing and livable community efforts. - Tamara Knox, cofounder and CEO of Seattle-based Frolic Community, which is developing intergenerational, cooperatively owned housing. - Stacy Torres, assistant professor of sociology at the University of California, San Francisco.
