Actions for an Equitable Society: A Virtual Town Hall Meeting

Central Community House will be holding a virtual Town Hall discussion about actions we can take to create an equitable society.

About this Event

We at Central Community House are saddened, sickened and angry at the needless, violent death of George Floyd (and the many others that came before him) that literally occurred under the feet of those who are supposed to protect us the most. It’s difficult to find words that have not already been said over the last weeks, months, years, and decades -- simply put, racism exists, and has for a very long time. Too little has been done to address inequities that exist across our communities and neighborhoods.

In the Near East, where Central resides, structural racism through redlining was used as a way to cut off the community from finance, public investment, and economic integration. The Near East was deemed “hazardous” simply because it was the heart of the African-American community. These impacts are still felt today, worsened by the continued, and growing, structural inequities, unequal economic opportunity, and day-to-day, ordinary interactions that threaten African American individuals.

These issues have been studied, written about, discussed, and lived by our neighbors for many years. Reports have been created, and blueprints for policy changes have been written. Still, we see few changes.

Now is the time for meaningful collective action that creates a just society.

We are amidst two “pandemics” – COVID 19 and racism. In both instances, we are concerned about the people we serve. And at a time when social distancing is necessary, Central would love to hug our neighbors, and wrap our arms around the community we care so much about. While we can’t physically do that, we hope to have the opportunity to listen, and be guided by your voices.
